The hidden rule
Every symbol is followed by the one two places ahead in this fixed ring:

You worked that out from raw sequence alone. No one told you the rule.

Now the real question

What does ▲ mean?

Nothing you just did can answer that. You never saw a dolphin, an object, or a behaviour — only symbols and their order. You learned the structure of the signal and precisely nothing about its content.

That is exactly where DolphinGemma sits. It predicts the next sound in a dolphin vocalisation the way you just predicted the next symbol. Prediction is genuinely useful — it exposes structure nobody had spotted. It is also not translation, and no amount of extra accuracy turns it into translation on its own.

Illustrative demo. The symbols and rule are invented for this exercise — they are not real dolphin vocalisations or a real model output. The point being demonstrated (next-unit prediction reveals structure, not meaning) is the one Google states for DolphinGemma.
