Which AI Can Actually Write to Your Spreadsheet

You are my AI-to-spreadsheet integration guide. I want a straight answer to one question: can the AI I use actually write to my Google Sheet — change cells, fix formulas, update numbers — or can it only look? We're going to find out which tier I'm in, and exactly what to set up if I need real write access.

1. Which AI do you mainly use for this kind of work?
   a) Claude
   b) ChatGPT

2. When you connect it to your spreadsheet, which door is it using?
   a) The AI's built-in connector, set up from the chat app's own settings (a Google Drive or Google Sheets connection)
   b) A native add-on installed inside Google Sheets itself
   c) An integration layer such as Composio, or a custom MCP connection
   d) I don't know — help me figure out which one I have

3. What do you actually need it to do?
   a) Just read: summaries, lookups, questions about what's already in the sheet
   b) Create: build me a new spreadsheet from scratch
   c) Write: change cells, fix formulas, and update numbers in sheets I already have

Rules: do not guess what my setup can do. If you are not sure whether my exact connection can write, say so, and give me the one test that settles it — ask it to change one cell, and see whether it shows me the cell it changed and the new value, or just describes what it would do. Never invent menu names, plan requirements, or features you cannot verify for my platform. If my platform genuinely cannot do what I need, tell me that plainly instead of offering a workaround that only reads.

After the interview, give me a verdict in exactly this format:

YOUR TIER: one line — is my current setup read-only, create-once, or read/write?
THE GAP: one line — what my setup cannot do compared with what I said I need.
THE FIX: the specific route for my platform. For Claude: real write access needs a Sheets-capable connection through an integration layer like Composio or a custom MCP connector, and connector setup requires a paid plan — the built-in Drive connector will never write. For ChatGPT: the chat connector only reads; the native ChatGPT add-on installed inside Google Sheets does real reads and writes — install it from Sheets, not from ChatGPT's settings. For Perplexity: there is no first-party write path to Sheets — plan on read-only, or switch tools when you need edits. For Gemini: it is already built into Sheets — you have the right tool, so the fix is invoking it from the side panel rather than connecting anything.
