What it is
Wispr Flow is a dictation app that turns spoken language into formatted text. Push a hotkey, talk, release — the text appears in whatever app has focus. The difference between Wispr Flow and the dictation built into your operating system is the formatting layer. Wispr cleans up filler words, adds punctuation, applies basic structure (bullets, paragraphs, headings when you ask for them), and matches the tone of what you've already written in the surrounding context. It runs on macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. There is no Linux client.
How it compares to native macOS / Windows dictation
Native dictation transcribes. Wispr Flow rewrites. That's the whole pitch. If I dictate "uh so I think the the next step is um maybe send the email" into macOS dictation, I get exactly that string — filler words, repetition, no punctuation. Into Wispr Flow, I get "I think the next step is to send the email." Multiply that across a thousand-word draft and the editing time drops to near zero. Native dictation is fine for short transcription tasks (a Slack reply, a calendar note). Wispr Flow is where it matters when the output is going somewhere a human will read.
Why I use it
I write the AI Super Simplified newsletter daily. Drafting in plain text was the bottleneck. Switching to Wispr Flow cut my first-draft time roughly in half — not because I talk faster than I type (I don't, much) but because I can think out loud without the friction of finger-on-keys keeping pace. The other unlock is prompt writing. Long, detailed prompts to Claude or ChatGPT are the kind of thing I'd previously stub out, then never flesh out. With Wispr Flow I just talk through what I want, hit send, and iterate. The threshold for writing a 400-word prompt collapsed to about 90 seconds of speaking.

First-draft every day. I talk through the take, Wispr cleans it, I edit on screen.
- Prompt engineering
Long, structured prompts to Claude or ChatGPT. Saying "now add a constraint that..." is faster than typing it.
- Email triage
Replies to long sponsor threads. I read the thread, talk the reply, send.
- Meeting notes
Post-call sweep — talk through what was decided while it's fresh.
- Outlining
Bullet-form outlines for newsletter weeks, sponsor pitches, and SOPs. Wispr formats bullets cleanly on request.
Features worth calling out
- Tone matching
Adapts output to the surrounding text — formal in email, casual in chat. Not perfect, but better than expected.
- Custom vocabulary
Add proper nouns (people, products, your brand names) so they're spelled correctly. Single biggest accuracy win for me.
- Hotkey-anywhere
Works in any text field on macOS / Windows. No copy-paste step.
- iOS keyboard
Phone version replaces the system keyboard. Useful for long replies on mobile.
- Multi-language
20+ languages supported. I've only used English; reviews on the others are reasonable.

Worth knowing before you buy
- It's cloud-only
Audio is sent to Wispr's servers for processing. No offline mode. If you're dictating sensitive material (legal, medical, confidential business), this is a real consideration. Their privacy policy is reasonable; the architecture is what it is.
- Subscription-only
No one-time purchase. $15/mo or nothing. Recurring software cost is the trade-off for ongoing model improvements.
- Free tier is a trial
2,000 words/week sounds generous; it's about three days of real use. Treat free as a one-week evaluation, not a long-term plan.

- Is Wispr Flow accurate?
Yes, in my experience — high-90s percent on clean audio with custom vocabulary trained. Background noise drops accuracy. Mumbling drops accuracy.
- Does it work offline?
No. Audio is sent to Wispr's servers for processing. There is no offline mode.
- Is my voice data used to train models?
Per their privacy policy, no — voice data is processed and not used for model training. Verify the current policy at wisprflow.ai before signing up if this matters to you.
- Linux support?
No Linux client. Wispr Flow runs on macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android.
- Can I cancel any time?
Yes, monthly subscription. Cancel inside the app or their billing portal.
- Does the iOS app work without the desktop app?
Yes. Each platform is standalone. You can use just iOS, just desktop, or both.
