Three Apps Just Moved Into Your Search Bar | Edition 290
Edition 290 — Canva, Instacart and YouTube Music now plug into AI Mode. Some steps finish there; most still hand off to the app.
You've probably never thought hard about what happens right after you hit search: type a question, get a page of blue links, then leave to actually do anything about the answer. That started to change on July 16, when AI Mode began reaching into three real apps — Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music — while you're still sitting inside the results page. It's rolling out to signed-in accounts in the US only, and it's a smaller, more specific change than the "search does your errands now" version of this story going around.
What actually shipped
Per the company's own July 16 announcement, linking each app lets AI Mode do three concrete things. Ask for a barbecue grocery list with Instacart connected, and the ingredients drop straight into your Instacart cart — you still check out "with just a few taps on their app or website." Ask for flyer design ideas with Canva connected, and AI Mode surfaces template choices to open and finish in Canva. Ask for a party playlist with YouTube Music connected, and AI Mode curates one, saves it, and hands you a play button. None of the three is a pilot — all three are live now, with more partners promised.
The catch: build here, finish there
Every one of the company's own examples ends with a real handoff. Checkout still happens inside Instacart. The actual flyer design still happens inside Canva. Playback still happens inside the YouTube Music app. AI Mode does the assembling — the list, the template options, the playlist — not the whole errand end to end. That's a genuinely useful shortcut for the "get me most of the way there" part of a task. It is not, yet, a search box that finishes the job without you ever leaving the page.
What's really being outsourced
| App | Starts in AI Mode | Still finishes in the app |
|---|---|---|
| Instacart | Building the shopping cart from your list | Checkout, on Instacart's app or site |
| Canva | Surfacing template options for your project | Actually designing the flyer, in Canva |
| YouTube Music | Curating and naming the playlist | Saving it and pressing play, in the app |
Who can try it, and who can't yet
AI Mode itself is free and already live for signed-in Google accounts (18+) in roughly 200 countries. The connected-apps piece is narrower: it's rolling out only to US accounts so far, and only once you've separately linked each service to your Google account. Outside the US, or without a linked app, you'll still see the older AI Mode — no cart button, no template row, no playlist card. Don't confuse this rollout with a separate stat: AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users globally back in May, two months before these integrations existed. That number is AI Mode's overall reach, not how many people have a working Instacart, Canva or YouTube Music connection — that figure isn't public.
What to type
If you're on a US account with connected apps live, three prompts to open with, each matching an example the company itself demonstrated: "Add ingredients for a backyard barbecue to my Instacart cart," "Show me flyer templates in Canva for a birthday party," and "Build me an upbeat party playlist and save it to YouTube Music." Try the before/after above first to see exactly where the search box's part ends and the app's part begins.
None of this makes Search an assistant that runs your errands start to finish. It makes it a faster on-ramp into three apps you were going to open anyway — which, quietly, is still worth knowing about.
